Ghanaian young entrepreneurs enter the dragon's Den
19th August 2011 Young people from the Ghanaian and African community are setting up their own businesses following an intensive training course run by the social enterprise, Ghanaian Londoners. The Young Entrepreneurs programme is training over 60 young people, with the first due to graduate on Saturday 20 August 2011.
Graduation day will see intense competition as young people present their business ideas to a panel of experts, including real-life serial entrepreneur Congolese-born Frederic Nze. The person with the winning pitch will get the chance to be mentored by Frederic and to tour his business – Oakam.
Frederic said:
“Young people don’t just need to wait for someone to give them a job, they can create their own jobs by making their business ideas a reality.
“With unemployment for young people in the UK at almost 20 per cent and higher still in minority communities, we need to do all we can to stop young talent being wasted. The work of Ghanaian Londoners has been excellent and I hope that this is just the beginning of something life-changing for the people on the programme.”
The Young Entrepreneurs Programme is a series of free interactive business, learning and mentoring sessions for young people aged between 18 to 24 years, funded by the Big Lottery Fund. It gives them the skills, encouragement and practical advice to set up and run a successful business. Topics include how to conduct market research, writing a business plan, how to arrange business finance and how to manage cash flow.
Importantly, young people will have the opportunity to meet established business owners, professionals and entrepreneurs.
Adwoa Agyemang, Founder of Ghanaian Londoners said:
“It is an amazing tribute to the young people on the course that Frederic is coming to the Dragon’s Den graduation day. Having inspirational business leaders involved in the project provides role models and proof for those on the course that with the right help, their dreams are within reach.”
Frederic Nze will be giving a speech at the event, discussing how he achieved starting two successful businesses in the UK and giving tips and encouragement.
Notes to editors:
The Graduation Day will be held at the Cumberland Hotel, St Johns Road, Harrow, Middlesex, HA1 2EF on Saturday 20 August 2011.
Oakam was established in 2007 and has since opened 15 stores in London as well as one Virtual Store which serves customers over the phone.
